Interstellar Gas Density

Scientific paper

High resolutions observations of Na I and Ca II optical absorption lines, combined with accurate stellar distances, along nearby lines-of-sight (d < 200 pc), in a 30 times 30 degree region surrounding the CO clouds MBM 12 and MBM 16, are used to map the density and spatial distribution of cold gas in the local interstellar medium. This spatial scale has not been previously studied with this detail. Five velocity complexes and 14 clouds are identified. Approximate masses of the clouds range from a few tens to a few thousands of solar masses. Most interestingly, gas at similar velocities appears at different distances.
