Design features and the performance envelope of the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) instrument on the Space Telescope are summarized. Encased in an Al alloy structure and including a GRP optical bench, the HRS weighs 700 lb and encompasses a volume of 64.5 cu ft. Low thermal expansion elements are used for detector elements which will be exposed to radiance passing through two apertures. The two Digicon detectors are sensitive in the 105-170 nm and 115-320 nm intervals, respectively, and will be used to study UV radiation from interstellar medium, stellar winds and extragalactic sources such as quasars and Seyfert galaxies. Details are provided of the instrument electronics and circuitry, signal processing capabilities and spectrograph components and operations.
