A linear analysis of the instability of a shock wave propagating through a gas that contains cosmic-ray particles shows that the precursor, a zone in the shock front formed by the pressure of the shock-accelerated cosmic rays, will be unstable against excitation of magnetoacoustic waves. The growth rate of this instability is determined, and its role in generating ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays is discussed.
