Masses and luminosities are determined for the RV Tauri star UU Her and for the 89 Her star HD 161796. It is assumed that both UU Her and HD 161796 are highly evolved and of low mass (M/solar M of 0.5-1.0). Using linear nonadiabatic, radial pulsation models together with the two observed periods and the effective temperatures for each star, masses and luminosities are calculated. In the case of HD 161796, for every model which fits the observational constraints at least one of the pulsation modes is unstable. This is in contrast with massive stellar models characteristic of classical Cepheid-like stars for which all low order modes are found to be stable. However, it is found that the results for both stars are dependent upon the location of the outer boundary of the stellar models. A reason for this and a solution are proposed. The results derived from the pulsation calculations are compared with evolution theory for postasymptotic giant branch stars.
