A brief look through the light curves published by the Variable Star Section shows that visual observations of star magnitudes can disagree by 0.5 magnitude or more. To reduce errors from this level to around 0.01 magnitude, observers can use the technique of photoelectric photometry (PEP). This article describes the equipment needed, explains how the observations are made and reduced, and closes with a summary of how to get started in PEP.
