The history and current status of variable star observing in the Netherlands is described. The Werkgroep Veranderlijke Sterren (WVS) of the Netherlands Association for Astronomy and Meteorology was founded in 1960. Variable star observers in the Netherlands face a number of hurdles: light pollution, extended summer twilight due to high latitude, and generally cloudy weather due to the North Atlantic.
