Optical emission lines and stellar velocity dispersions indicate that many or most ordinary galaxies harbor central massive black holes. Several types of nuclear properties are present: low-luminosity Seyferts, LINERs, HII nuclei, and pure absorption-line nuclei. We are conducting a volume-limited snapshot survey of nearby galaxies to investigate whether X-ray nuclear emission is present in some or all of these galaxy types. Results from 2ks observations of about 20 of these galaxies using the Chandra ACIS-S instrument will be reported. We find a wide range of nuclear X-ray properties with 1039 < Lx < 1041 erg/s (0.5-8 keV). Some galaxies have strong AGN-like emission, others have nuclear sources comparable to the brighter stellar sources in the host galaxy, while yet others are completely undetected. This work is supported by NASA contract NAS8-38252.
