We have completed one fourth of our currently planned observations in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). The limiting flux reached in 130 ks is ~ 5x 10-16{erg cm}-2 {s}-1 in the 0.5-10 KeV band. In a solid angle of 0.08 deg2, we detect 121 sources above the 2σ level. The positional accuracy achieved is ~ 1" , leading to the identification of optical counterparts with high certainty. For the identification work, we utilize data from the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) taken at the NTT in the UBVRJK bands, and with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) at the 2.2-meter telescope in the B band. We have also carried out a deep survey in the BVR bands with the FORS camera on ANTU (UT-1 at VLT). We are complete to R≈ 26. Optical spectra of ~ 30 optical identifications have been obtained so far using FORS. We discuss preliminary results on the average X-ray spectra of the sources, the Log N-Log S relationship and the source contribution to the X-ray background in the soft and hard bands. The angular correlation function for the sources in the CDFS is also presented. We describe relationships between optical and X-ray properties and comment on particularly interesting objects.
