Following the discovery of giant arcs and then distorted objects in some rich clusters of galaxies such as Abell 370, and their interpretation as due to gravitational lensing by the clusters, a new class of gravitational lenses is now being explored. It leads to a new approach in the study of the distribution of dark matter in clusters as well as possibility to explore the background population of distant galaxies.
