The evolution of galaxies is investigated, taking into account a detailed description of the stars and a multi-component interstellar medium as well as their interactions. Since cooling and heating processes determine the dynamical evolution of galaxies but depend on the metal content, dynamical and chemical evolution are intimately coupled. First, the models show that different initial conditions can account for several observed properties and the different types of galaxies and, secondly, that most galaxies experience repeated star-formation bursts on time-scales which also depend on the initial conditions.
