Understanding of the plasma universe through in situ investigation of the near-earth cosmological plasma and magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions is considered. The geomagnetic field connects the ionosphere and the magnetosphere, causing an exchange of energy and momentum between the two regions which is executed by the magnetic-field-aligned electric Birkeland currents. Through instabilities and particle acceleration, these currents lead to a selective exchange of plasma which causes chemical separation. Magnetic-field-aligned electric fields have important consequences both for the dynamics of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, and for the energization of charged particles.
