The variability of the dust forming environment in circumstellar shell of long-period variables requires both, a treatment of dust formation and growth, and a treatment of the destruction of dust due to thermal evaporation. Therefore, a system of moment equations which describes the time evolution of the dust component in both situations is derived. A special representation for the size distribution of dust particles is developed which comprises the actual distribution function and its history at every instant during the calculation. As a consequence, the computational effort for a time-dependent treatment of dust destruction by thermal evaporation reduces substantially. The method is applied to the formation and destruction of carbon dust in an adiabatic gas undergoing sinusoidal time variations of the temperature. It turns out, that thermal destruction of dust particles requires temperatures much higher than the temperature of condensation. Nevertheless, evaporation is important already at lower temperatures, because the particle radius and therefore the amount of condensed material is reduced significantly before the dust particles are destroyed.
