Studies of variable stars in nearby galaxies serve many purposes: establishing distances; testing ever-improving models of stellar evolution; allowing comparisons to be made with counterpart variable stars elsewhere in Local Group galaxies; and improving understanding of galaxy evolution. Our program aims to establish precise and accurate (B,V)-light curves, pulsation periods, oscillation modes and other pulsation properties (dP/dt rates, Blazhko periods, RRd stars) for the variable stars in the outer-halo globular clusters of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The physical characteristics of the stars ([Fe/H], L, T_eff, mass, evolutionary phase), most of which are RR Lyrae stars, are then derived and compared with variable stars located elsewhere in the Local Group and with pulsation models. Four of the five target clusters lie beyond the OGLE and MACHO fields and thus provide important constraints for models of the LMC halo (NGC 2210 was observed by OGLE-III and serves as a useful control cluster). Last year we observed NGC 1841 and made follow-up observations of the LMC halo clusters Reticulum, NGC 1466, NGC 2257 and NGC 2210. We are asking for time to acquire CCD images essential for completing the NGC 1841, Reticulum and NGC1466 projects. Emphasis will be on NGC 1841 (primary target) with additional observations of Reticulum and NGC 1466 (secondary targets).
