The gravitational signals emitted by stars and black holes at their birth and during their life, generate a stochastic background of radiation. Contributions to this astrophysical background can be of galactic or extragalactic origin and they spread over a large frequency range: from ν~10-4-10-3 Hz, tipical of binary systems, up to several kHz for signals emitted by collapsing stars. Extragalactic contributions cannot be evaluated without the knowledge of the star formation hystory, which has now been reconstructed up to redshits of z~4-5, on the basis of the data collected by large telescopes as the Hubble Space Telescope and Keck. The spectral properties of GW-backgrounds generated by galactic and extragalactic processes have been estimated for a number of astrophysical sources, and we shall discuss the detectability of these signals by present and future planned detectors, and the constraints they put on the detectability of backgrounds of gravitational waves of cosmological origin.
