Since 1978, the authors have collaborated in producing a readily-available archive of cometary photometric data. There is still no electronic (e.g., photoelectric photometers, CCDs) means for readily obtaining total visual magnitudes of comets when the coma diameters are large (>≡20arcsec), and visual estimates of the total brightness are still the most abundant type of data for comets during the past 100 years besides astrometric data. In lieu of the usefulness of collecting and maintaining such data in a standard format in one location, the authors have published in the International Comet Quarterly (ICQ) >18000 visual observations of comets made by ≡600 observers since 1940. Here they discuss what is available, what has been accomplished thus far, and what potentials and limitations are inherent in the ICQ photometric data archive.
