Two telescopes in the Antarctic observed comet Halley in 1986 as part of the International Halley Watch Large Scale Phenomena Network Island net. A station at 65 deg S, 64 deg W used a Schmidt camera and obtained the first recorded observation of the comet from the continent on Feb. 25. A station at 76 deg S, 27 deg W was equipped with an 11 in. telescope and Schmidt camera. A picture taken at the station was digitized and returned to the UK over a satellite data link. Because of the isolation of the Antarctic, the film taken cannot be returned before 1987.
