In presence of thermal ionization, that is characteristic of hot Jupiter atmospheres, the interactions of atmospheric winds and the planetary magnetic field results in an induction of electrical current into the interior of the planet. The resulting Ohmic dissipation in the interior may provide an adequate energy source to explain the anomalously inflated radii of hot Jupiters. Here, we present coupled calculations of structural evolution and Ohmic dissipation. It appears that extra-solar gas giant radius anomalies can be explained in the context of the Ohmic inflation mechanism.
