In the first ever definitive discovery of spectrum variations in the Mercury-Manganese stars, the Hg 2 λ 3984 line in the binary star α And is found to be variable by comparison of high dispersion spectra with S/N ratios greater than 500. These changes are not due to the orbital motion of the companion. They most likely reflect the hydrodynamical processes in the stellar photosphere. Mercury has a variable spatial abundance which may also be istopically variable in the stellar photosphere.
