Comet P/Halley was observed photographically at ESO on La Silla from Feb. 17 to Apr. 17, 1986. 125 widefield camera images were used to study the dynamics within the plasma tail. Velocity and acceleration along the tail were determined from 122 tail condensations. During the observational campaign the mean acceleration was 43±2 cm/s2. Variations of the acceleration with respect to the distance from the nucleus and to heliocentric distance were measured. The motions of the condensations were followed back in time to obtain the time of zero distance from the nucleus. The mean time interval between these starting dates is 53.5±1.7 hours which is interpreted as the rotational period of the nucleus. The mean aberration angle of the plasma tail during the observational period was +1.8±0.3 degrees. Mean coma diameter in the CO+ filter used was 7.5±1.5×105km.
