A 3-dimensional MHD model for a Halley type comet is presented and compared with the magnetic field measurements of the Giotto spacecraft. The model takes into account the inclined interplanetary field, the net effect of mass loading by ionisation of the cometary gases, the elastic collisions between neutrals and ions, and the Lorentz-forces of the piled up magnetic field.
