Observed properties and conceptual models of comet nuclei are reviewed, to aid in the planning of a sample return mission to a comet. Nuclear properties are understood (the 1986 spacecraft encounters with P/Halley provided much valuable information): dimensions, large-scale morphology, albedo, water-ice as the predominant constituent, proportions of dust and ice, and the size, distribution, and composition of the dust. However, knowledge in other areas, including information crucial to the design of an optimal mission, is still very poor: the small-scale surface roughness, internal heterogeneity (vertically and otherwise), properties of cometary mantles, the state in which compounds other than H2O are incorporated, and the physical properties of nuclear material (porosity, density, strength, and effective thermal conductivity).
