Ideas of nucleus structure are reviewed in the light of the Halley missions and spectroscopic studies. Nucleus splitting; brightness outbursts and vanishing; activity as far out as Jupiter and beyond are supplemented by directed jet emissions, irregular surges, and a warm black surface. Carbonaceous rather than mineral particulates, and sulfur and carbon compounds seem to be more important, with little evidence of volatile elementary gasses. Exotic energy sources (chemical, physical (phase change), radiogenic) may have a role, but the primary source is solar radiation, possibly captured in subsurfce ice by a greenhouse effect. An evolving inhomogeneous surface and structured surface layers dominate the comet's behavior.
