It is argued that cometary material, as deduced from comet Halley results, bears a remarkable resemblance to the chemical and morphological structure of a primitive aggregate of interstellar dust. The principal clues are found in the sizes of cometary dust, the nonvolatile organics in cometary dust, the surface albedo, the physical and photochemical break-up of the dust molecules in the coma via the appearance, for example, of CN and very abundant C(+) ions, the high surface temperature but low internal temperature, low comet density, solar orientation of gas and dust jets, and low C/O ratio in coma. There are several reasons to expect no significant modification of the interior and even of the surface of the nucleus of comet Halley since it was formed 4500 million yr ago. This implies that gentle handling and cold retrieval of comet nucleus material may reveal the true nature of the primeval material out of which it formed.
