Cometary and meteoritic matter, though originally interstellar, was reprocessed to varying degrees in the early solar system. The history of cometary matter can be inferred from various clues; specifically, the following questions are considered in this paper: (1) Anhydrous, Fe2+-bearing silicates: when and where did they form? (2) Hydrated silicates: if present, were they made by gaseous or liquid H2O? (3) Sources of organic compounds: ion-molecule reactions, photochemistry, grain catalysis. (4) Sources of CO2 and of organic polymer. (5) Interstellar molecules and grains in comets.
