We report on the serendipitous detection, and subsequent abundance analysis, of the Magellanic Stream, seen in Mg 2 absorption by GHRS toward the background Seyfert galaxy III Zw 2A. Unlike the one previous abundance determination for the Stream (Lu, Savage & Sembach 1994), which sampled a region only marginally outside the LMC--SMC common H 1 envelope, III Zw 2A probes the trailing Stream gas ~ 100(deg) away from LMC (near the MS V concentration, dubbed so by Mathewson, Cleary & Murray 1977). The implications for the origin and evolution of the Magellanic Stream will be commented upon.
