The average intensity profiles of 12 pulsars with complex pulse shapes were calculated for up to 11 frequencies in the 135-2380 MHz range. The profile shapes show a clear frequency dependence; although most of the profiles were chosen to have three or more components near 400 MHz, at lower frequencies several of them appear as simple profiles with one component. Most of the profiles fit into Rankin's core-conal component classification where frequency dependent profiles are explained by core components having a steeper spectrum than conal components. There are some perplexing exceptions. A feature common to many of these pulsars is the presence of a trailing component at low frequency which fails to develop into a strong 'conal' component at high frequencies but instead becomes an 'exponential' decay at the trailing edge.
