The distribution of rich clusters of galaxies is studied in velocity space, i.e., along the line of sight, and along projected spatial directions in the plane of the sky. Strong elongation in the redshift direction is observed, corresponding to a velocity broadening of about 2000 km/s among cluster pairs. Possible causes of this effect are peculiar velocities of clusters on large scales and geometrical elongation of superclusters. If the effect is entirely due to peculiar velocity on the large scales of superclusters, then such superclusters may contain a larger amount of dark matter than previously anticipated. It is suggested, however, that the observed elongation may be at least partly due to geometrical elongation of large-scale structures, possibly in the form of cell or shell structure. Observational tests are described that can distinguish between velocity and geometrical anisotropies.
