The author discusses the papers of various authors which have observed the very broad-band structure (VBS) in the spectra of highly-reddened stars using different methods. It is possible to use the colour excess ratio E(b-y)/E(B-V) as a measure of the strength of the VBS. The author found that this ratio varies between 0.7 and 0.8 for intermediately and highly-reddened stars with observed VBS. He calibrated the colour excess ratio in terms of the central depth of the VBS. From the calibration stars and 13 reddened young open clusters containing more than 10 B-type stars he derived a relation between the central depth of the VBS and the reddening E(B-V) which is in good agreement with the results of van Breda and Whittet (1981) and supports the assumption that the VBS is a continuous phenomenon originating in solid grains.
