The Lunar Cataclysm 3.9 Gyr ago is still a controversial subject more than 30 years since its discovery. Researchers are still divided over the interpretation of crater counts and the provenance of Apollo samples. Surprisingly, lunar basin magnetization has not been used yet to constrain basin formation history. I will show that basin magnetization data strongly support a minimal cataclysm (which includes only Hertzsprung and Imbrian basins). Available crater SFD data are also consistent with this picture. This event is not consistent with delayed planetary migration but may indicate a disruption of a single body. We calculate that a survival of a Vesta-sized primordial Mars-crosser until this era is possible if the initial population was about 0.01 Earth masses (Bottke et al. 2007, in contrast, studied only bodies with q<1.2). Tidal disruption of this body by Earth or Venus would produce enough impactors to fuel the cataclysm on the inner planets.
This body also naturally fits the constraints on the parent body of mesosiderite meteorites. I will discuss other implications and predictions of this hypothesis.
