Produced by the action of stellar winds and supernova explosions from OB associations, supershells can have major effects on the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies. They also provide connections between galaxies, their halos, and the intergalactic medium (IGM). In this talk I will discuss global effects of supershells, including the injection rate of hot gas, the spread of heavy elements, and the radiative transport of ionizing photons. Supershell dynamics and shell breakthrough to the halo may facilitate these processes in starburst galaxies, both locally and at high redshift. Starburst galaxies may contribute significantly to the metagalactic ionizing background radiation (1-4 Rydbergs). Massive stars and OB associations probably affect the ISM of intervening disk galaxies and intergalactic Lya absorbers. Large portions of the IGM are strongly influenced by local effects, through the radiative and energetic feedback from massive star formation in the first galaxies.
