This paper will present results from a study of the cooling flow filaments around NGC 1275, the central galaxy in the Perseus cluster. Emission-line measurements were used to investigate the ionization state and heating mechanism of the nebular gas. The emission-line properties were measured from an extensive spectroscopic data set acquired at the Lick Observatory 3-meter telescope. Line ratio diagrams reveal that the filaments are described by extremely low ionization. The data were also used to probe the excitation properties and the kinematics as a function of radius at several position angles. Implications for the underlying energy source for the filaments will be discussed.
