The Red MSX Source survey has been specifically designed to identify a large, well-selected sample of young massive stars. A crucial part of defining our sample is determining accurate distances to our sources, without which we cannot obtain source luminosities, and thus, distinguish between nearby low- and intermediate-mass stars from genuine massive young stars. Kinematic distances can be derived using the source velocities in conjunction with a Galactic rotation model. However, for sources located within the solar circle (< 8.5 kpc) there are two possible kinematic distances for any given velocity, equally spaced on either side of the tangent point, commonly referred to as the near and far distances. These kinematic distance ambiguities represent a serious hurdle that needs to be addressed before many of the important source parameters can be calculated. We propose to use Mopra to map the molecular emission associated with our sources. These emission maps will be compared with the HI emission at the same velocity to resolve the distance ambiguities using the HI self-absorption technique. With these observations in hand we will have distances to our whole sample and be in a position to probe the large scale structure of the Galaxy.
