We have completed an extensive survey which revealed that Seyfert 1 nuclei are much more common than previously thought in nearby galaxies. Most of the nuclei have broad HAlpha luminosities ranging from 10 to 1000 times fainter than those of classical Seyfert 1 nuclei. These ``dwarf'' Seyferts populate the faint end of the local AGN luminosity function and hold important clues to the evolution of the entire AGN population. They also may contribute to the X-ray background. Our survey has identified a large, statistically significant sample of these objects for the first time, and we are conducting a program to study their properties systematically. Using WFPC2, we propose to obtain UV {F218W} and visual {F547M} continuum images to study the UV light distribution of a subsample of 24 dwarf Seyfert 1 nuclei. The UV properties of these sources, as well as their relationship to those of Seyfert 1 nuclei of higher luminosity or to those of narrow- lined AGNs, are largely unknown. We will combine the UV fluxes with archival ROSAT data to investigate the dependence of the UV-X-ray spectral energy distribution on luminosity. Bright UV sources will become prime targets for future spectroscopic observations with HST. As by-products of this study, we will publish UV surface photometry of the observed galaxies, and we will identify interesting morphological features {e.g., dust lanes, blue stars, HII regions}. Moreover, we will be able to recognize compact cores that may be produced by massive central black holes.
