The UGC-INFONET programme was designed to provide electronic access to scholarly literature to the Indian university system. The programme now includes in its scope more than 150 universities, and provides access to more than 5000 journals in all fields of learning. Thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate colleges are being offered electronic access through the related N-LIST programme. The genesis of these schemes, their present status, and possibilities for the future are discussed in this paper.
