Powerful radio sources at all redshifts exhibit extendedstructures which are believed to be excited in some way by theactive nucleus. This extranuclear activity, often seen onscales exceeding 100 kpc, emits both lines and continuum inthe optical and ultraviolet bands. A clear understanding ofthe physical processes operating in these extended emissionline regions (EELR) enables us to measure the properties (gasmass and density, kinematics, chemical composition etc.) of ahost galaxy's environment from the present epoch out toredshifts of 3 or 4. This is a proposal to apply newly-developed ultraviolet emission line diagnostics to the EELR intwo radio galaxies which show orientation-dependentasymmetries. Ratios of resonance to semi-forbidden lines aresensitive, in distinguishable ways, both to dust and to theviewing geometry of externally illuminated clouds. Bydistinguishing in this way between the material on the nearand far side of the AGN, we can use other observedasymmetries, eg, radio jet sidedness, radio depolarizationasymmetry and EELR and radio brightness asymmetry, to build athree dimensional picture of the source and so obtain a truepicture of the interactions between the various components.Such improved physical understanding will greatly sharpen ourability to disentangle stellar and AGN-induced processes inthe highest redshift radio galaxies.
