Hst Proposal Id #6646 Stellar Populations

Scientific paper

This project proposes to obtain UV and blue WFPC2 images of anew class of galaxies: dwarf spirals. As with most lowsurface brightness (LSB) galaxies, dwarf spirals have theconflicting properties of very blue mean colors with littleevidence of current or past star formation. We propose toresolve, or at least better define, this dilemma with WFPC2imaging to investigate the nature and extent of the hotcomponent of the stellar population in dwarf spirals. As anewly discovered class of galaxies, very little is known oftheir origin or evolution. Nothing is known of their UVproperties. Their low contrast to the night sky makes themexcellent candidates for space imaging.
