There are two fundamental predictions of the current popularmodel for X-ray emitting gas in individual ellipticalgalaxies: the origin of the gas is stellar mass loss, and theX-ray emission cools the gas, leading to cooled material thatis distributed through the galaxy. We can test thesepredictions by determining the amount of cool, metal-rich gaswithin the hot atmospheres. This will be accomplished bymeasuring the equivalent widths of absorption lines fromcooled material (ionMg2, ionFe2) against the continuum ofbackground quasars that we discovered. We proposeobservations for three early-type systems: NGC 4203, whichhas a bright quasar projected only 6 kpc (1min point9) fromits center; NGC 720, an X-ray bright system with a quasarprojected 33 kpc (6min point5) from the center; and NGC 4261,which has the most extensive hot atmosphere and where thequasar is projected 36 kpc (6min point7) from the center.
