We propose to observe spectroscopically both components ofthe new double QSO HS 1216+5032 (z=1.43, d=9.1") with theFOS in high resolution in the range 2200 to3270Angstrom with the aim to measure transverse dimensionsof Ly-alpha forest clouds in the in this respect unexploredredshift range z=0.8 to 1.4 for which this QSO pair isan excellent target with a linear separation of 80 h_50^-1 kpc. This double QSO recently discovered by the Hamburgsurvey is particularly well suited for a Ly-alpha foreststudy since it samples Ly-alpha clouds on a scaleslightly smaller than the expected characteristiccloud sizes. Identification and spectroscopy of possibleparent galaxies at z~1 from the ground combined with FOSdata will yield 2-dimensional information on Ly-alphaclouds for the first time.
