BL Lac objects are an unusual and important class of extragalactic objects, being the clearest astrophysical manifestation of relativistic beaming and the impetus for the statistical unification of radio-loud active galaxies. HST is ideally suited to studying the isotropic properties of BL Lacs, including their host galaxy morphologies, the frequency of close companion galaxies, and the richness of the surrounding environment. These properties are critical to evaluating the unification of BL Lac objects with low luminosity {FRI} radio galaxies, as well as useful for understanding the origin of the nuclear BL Lac emission and for testing the gravitational microlensing hypothesis. We propose a broad-band snapshot survey of the 6 best BL Lac samples {the brightest radio sample, the four brightest X-ray samples, and the only optical sample} in order to investigate systematic trends in host galaxy type, unusual morphological features, nearby companion galaxies, etc. All of these objects have already been studied at radio and X-ray wavelengths, so considerable data exist for understanding the global energy source.
