We propose to undertake a SNAPSHOT program to image a representative sample of B 21 field galaxies at z=0.3 using HST's WFPC2. The target galaxies will be drawn from a pool of nearly 100 galaxies with measured internal kinematics from an extensive set of existing high resolution ground- based spectroscopic data, obtained over the last four years with the AAT and CTIO 4-m telescopes. We have already derived global OII and OIII emission line profiles from these ground- based spectra. The proposed HST imaging will provide the following data needed to derive a rotation speed and mass-to- light ratio for each of the galaxies: [a] disk inclination based on the isophotal shape of the F814W {rest frame R-band} light distribution; [b] radial surface brightness profile {and disk exponential scale length} in F814W, which is a good predictor of the shape of the rotation curve {as shown for local galaxies}; and [c] approximate map of the regions of active star formation via comparison of the F555W {rest frame B} image with that in F814W. With a reliable estimation of the circular speed, these HST data will allow us to construct an accurate luminosity-vs-rotation speed {Tully-Fisher} relation for field galaxies at z=0.3. A comparison will then be made with the Tully-Fisher relation for local galaxies of similar absolute magnitude and/or rotation speed, to determine the amount of luminosity evolution in distant field galaxies.
