A lunar eclipse offers a unique opportunity to investigate the terrestrial atmosphere. A recent work (Pallé et al. 2009) has published the Earth’s transmission spectrum from 0.36 to 2.40 μm obtained during the partial lunar eclipse of August 16th 2008. We have set out to interpret the measured spectrum, and assess to what extent the conclusions can be extrapolated to an exoplanet’s in-transit transmission spectrum.
