The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a 6.5 meter cryogenic telescope scheduled to be launched in 2014. JWST has a complement of near-IR (1μm - 5μm) and mid-IR (5μm - 28μm) instruments that include modes suitable for detecting and characterizing exoplanets, and studying different stages of planetary system evolution. Direct imaging studies of young, self-luminous planets will be possible using coronagraphic imagers of the instruments. JWST’s large collecting area will facilitate extensive characterization of the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets.
