Spectral wave enhancements due to the isotropization of interstellar pickup protons have proven to be much more difficult to observe than originally predicted. We point out that ambient fluctuations in the solar wind will necessarily produce a range of initial pitch angles for these particles, leading to pickup distributions with an intrinsic spread in pitch angle. We estimate the magnitude of this intrinsic spread as a function of the ambient wave intensity and find that it can be substantial. Pickup-proton-generated wave spectra from distributions with such an intrinsic pitch-angle spread display reduced intensities and peaks shifted to higher frequencies, compared to spectra from distributions without a spread.
