We present a new discussion of the convective Urca process leading to the conclusion that it cannot delay carbon ignition in degenerate carbon-oxygen cores. We start from an old analysis by Lazareff (1975) who calculated the derivative of the entropy in the convective core. We show on very general grounds that this derivative is positive which means that the Urca process can never stabilize nuclear burning. To clarify our result, we propose a simple picture of the convective core which illustrates the analogy between the convective Urca process and a thermodynamic engine.
