The aurora is a three dimensional time dependent signal with additional information in the spectral regime. The large dynamic range of the auroral signal raises rigorous requirements on the imaging detector. A new system for ground based auroral imaging, ALIS (Auroral Large Imaging System), is being constructed in the northern part of Sweden, using up to 14 stations with CCD (Charge Coupled Device) cameras. The stations are separated with about 50 km and are connected to a control center. Tomographic conversion techniques are applied to derive the three dimensional auroral signal. The key component of the ALIS system is the imaging detector. Unfortunately it is not possible to acquire an ideal auroral imaging detector; instead several compromises are necessary and shortcomings need to be overcome. The important aspects of the design of a ground based auroral imaging system are discussed.
