An outline of the Grazing Incidence detector Spectrometer (GIS) for the Soho (Solar and Heliospheric Laboratory) Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) is presented and the design of the transputer based data processor and control system, is described. The GIS uses four detector heads each having a microchannel plate EUV sensor with one dimensional progressive geometry readout. They are arranged around the Rowland circle of a grating and cover four separate wavelength ranges over 150 to 800 A. The sensor information is decoded to provide 2048 positions for each detector head which map directly as wavelength. The science information processing and the command and housekeeping system is described, including an appreciation of the important tradeoffs necessary for a practical design for space applications.
