MAssive Compact Halo Objects are the last possibility for baryonic matter to be responsible for the mass of our galactic halo. These objects could be anything from brown dwarfs to tiny "Jupiters" and/or even mini black-holes since their formation mechanism is unknown. Their detection through microlensing in front of stars in the Magellanic Clouds was suggested by Paczynski (1986). This observational approach has now been initiated and the status of a french collaboration is presented along with possible options for the future. The objective is to rule out or detect a "standard" halo after the first five months of observations at La Silla (ESO, Chile).
