We present new constraints on the kinetic temperature anisotropies of the O5+ ions in the polar coronal holes. Our analysis is based on the observations of the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft. We find that the observations are consistently reproduced when considering anisotropies less than 5 between heliocentric distances 2.0 Rsun and 2.7 Rsun. Below 2.0 Rsun and above 2.7 Rsun no anisotropies or Tperpendicular/Tparallel significantly smaller than 5 are sufficient to obtain the observed spectral line profiles. Our analysis provides also height dependencies of Tperpendicular and Tparallel. We also discuss the possible existence of other mechanisms that may reduce kinetic temperature anisotropies in the polar coronal holes.
