The surprising discoveries of large amount of perclorate salts on Mars by the Phoenix mission could explain the Viking controversial results. May be probable that GC/MS destroyed all organic molecules during the heating up to 500 °C due to the presence of perclorates. On the contrary the LR experiment, being performed at low temperature, was not affected, and its positive response could be re-considered as biological.
