It has been more than four decades since Frank Drake conducted the first, modern radio SETI experiment by searching solar-type star systems for persistent (minutes or hours), narrow-band signals (Drake 1960). Today, this approach remains a SETI strategy of choice (Tarter 1997). In this paper, we question the plausibility of this scheme by considering the problem from the point of view of the putative transmitting society. We deduce that very short, repetitive signal bursts might be a more likely signal sent from societies seeking to attract our attention.
